Brazil Tours by Latin Excursions
Brazil stretches far out into the Atlantic toward West Africa and Portugal where it finds its transplanted cultural roots and reaches equally deep into the South American continent toward the Andes where it harbors its homegrown roots. It contrasts some of the greatest uninhabited expanses of the rainforest in the world with the cosmopolitan cities of Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo.
Rio exceeds all expectation and is a “must-see” place in a lifetime. Picture yourself on sweeping strands of golden beaches, the magnificent surf pounding the shore, the only drink a sliced open coconut and entertainment provided by teams of Cariocas playing beach volleyball. Rio’s sheer exuberance is intoxicating throughout the year. Even its architecture varies, from Lusitanian Baroque outbreaks in the centro to Neoclassism that might have been assembled by a Paris patissier, to outcrops of freeform modernism revealing Le Corbusier in its gene pool. Taking in the full dramatic effect of the “Cidade Maravilhosa” requires some removal, perhaps to the balcony of your suite at the Copacabana Palace at dusk. You will enjoy views of Sugarloaf Mountain at the north end of the beach, the Arpoador Peninsula with the looming peaks of Os Dois Irmaos on the southern end, the bottle green Atlantic Ocean and the twinkling lights of Niteroi on the far side of Guanabara Bay. Even higher, ascend through the favelas to Parque Nacional de Tijuca and the magnificent Christ the Redeemer Statue overlooking the entire city.
Just to the south of Rio lies the spectacular archipelago of Angra dos Reis, made up of 365 pristine islands, and popular for those looking to relax in an exclusive destination unknown to mass tourism with marvelous, unspoiled beaches and a variety of outdoor adventures including island-hopping, snorkeling, scuba diving and kayaking.
Heading north along the coast, the colorful colonial architecture and lively cultural heritage of Salvador beckons. Perfectly situated on the mouth of the enormous bay of Todos os Santos, the capital of the state of Bahia is bastion of Afro-Brazilian customs and traditions and offers a captivating history, fine architecture, delicious Bahian cuisine and lively street life.
The famed Brazilian Amazon blankets the interior of the country and covers half of the country’s land mass. Manaus, the chief port and hub of the entire Amazon region, is the capital of the state of Amazonas and one of the most isolated cosmopolitan cities of the world. Offering an excellent starting point for exploring the vast region, many boat and land trips depart from Manaus into the surrounding jungle and its unparalleled biodiversity.
Containing all the scenic and cultural variety one would expect, the largest country, or continent as Brazilians are fond of informing their visitors, in South America does not disappoint.
