Panama, a destination where the past and present are beautifully intertwined, offers a delightful combination of history, culture, and adventure experiences that you can pack into one week. On this family-friendly Catamaran adventure tour, we invite you to explore the region where English Naval Officer Sir Francis Drake (or El Draque the Pirate as the Spanish called him) blasted his way into Panama to disrupt the Spanish conquistadors search of gold. Starting in Panama City, you will begin with a tour of Old Town for an introduction to the country. The following day, begin your San Blas Catamaran tour for 2 nights until reaching Portobelo. In 1502, this town became the main point of trade for Spaniard ships between Europe and Central and South America who were gathering gold from the Incas and Aztecs as well as trading slaves. After a week of exploring the Caribbean and Panama City, you will have bragging rights for life to be able to say you sailed one of the original entry points to the new world, like the original Pirates of the Caribbean!
Arrive Panama City, Panama
Upon arrival in Panama City, your private driver and guide will take you to La Concordia Hotel in Casco Viejo for lunch and a private walking tour of the lovely Caso Antiguo neighborhood with an expert, bilingual history guide. Explore multiple historic churches, street vendors filled with brightly colored textiles called?molas, and plenty of vibrant colors all set along the Pacific Ocean.
Overnight La Concordia
San Blas Catamaran Tour
After a delightful breakfast at La Concordia, continue via private ground transfer to El Porvenir or Albrook (depending on time of year) to board the Panama Catamaran for 2 nights of exploring the San Blas Archipelago. Lunch and dinner will be served on deck while you calmly sail along 300 islands with healthy coral reef formations.
The San Blas Archipelago, formerly known as “Guna Yala” is a remote region of the Caribbean due to its close proximity to the mainland and shallow water, making it difficult for large vessels to enter. Home to curious and colorful marine creatures such as dolphins, tropical fish, and sea turtles, this San Blas Catamaran tour will make you never want to leave these pristine paradisaical turquoise waters. Get ready for the Guna Yala’s way of life and a chance to disconnect from technology, only to reconnect with nature.

Sailing from San Blas to Portobelo
After two days of sailing, this day will bring you back to land at one of America’s first Spanish port towns called Portobelo. Here, the Spaniards would trade slaves and gather the gold collected from the Aztecs and Inca before returning to their motherland. Word quickly spread about this small port town and the amount of gold coming through it, so that brought pirates from all over Europe.
The catamaran will drop you off at El Otro Lado, a hotel designed as a “passion project” allowing travelers from around the globe to experience true Portobelo. One of the most unique aspects of staying at this property is that they only hire locals and are focused on protecting the local Congo culture. This evening after dinner, students from a local school in Portobelo will do a Congo Dancing & Drum Performance.?
Overnight El Otro Lado
This morning you can choose to relax at El Otro Lado and utilize the complimentary stand-up paddleboards, kayaks, pool, two nature trails, or simply read a book in a hammock. If none of those fancy your style then join an interactive art workshop with EOL’s local in-house artist, Anel! Later this morning, board a boat to explore Portobelo Bay and the Rustic Beach where a picnic lunch will be served (weather conditions may vary experiences for this day).

Explore Gatun Lake by Boat & Visit Local Embera Tribe
Today will be a delightful, yet bizarre, change of scenery to Gatun Lake. At one point in time, it was the largest artificial lake in the world and is the reason that the Panama canal can operate to this day. You will board a pontoon boat equipped with kayaks, fishing gear, and birding gear for a day of exploration and scenic navigation. Surrounded by the flourishing rain forest, you can expect to observe and hear a great deal of tropical birds, monkeys, crocodiles, and other exotic animals.
Part of this navigation includes a visit to the Embera Village and community where an indigenous tribe lives and practices their original way of life. It is a promising, life-changing experience to witness for yourself! Afterwards, you will return to El Otro Lado for a final evening in cultural paradise, only to rise to the sound of howler monkeys in the distance.
